In The Ends

"We only want to be free. And as funny as it sounds it's all we want. To not have our egos bound with the rays of suns. Because man should be free as falling rain. To find what he loves even if it's pain" - The Growlers

RT 13: Pine Needles & Duke

In many cultures, the number 13 is considered unlucky.  It's why you'll often see the 13th floor skipped in high-rise buildings and why certain activities are avoided on Friday the 13th.

Separately, Coach K has a quote about teamwork: "There are five fundamental qualities that make every team great: communication, trust, collective responsibility, caring and pride.  I like to think of each as a separate finger on the fist.  Any one individually important.  But all of them together are unbeatable."

RT 13 presented some challenges and you have to wonder if unlucky 13 played a role.  Or maybe we just forgot about Coach K's first fundamental: communication.  Park wound up with a late arrival in Raleigh and didn't get the airport pickup he was looking for.  Vandy was sitting patiently in the rental truck while the rest of the crew drove to Raleigh without him.  Dan subbed 2 queens for a king/pull-out suite and we never used the suite as a party room.  And my Duke ticket hookup left the wrong name at will call.  Who the fuck is Krishna?!

And after 12 healthy RTs, I got nailed with a sick bug that put me on the sidelines for more of the trip than I would have liked.  I realized that FOMO is a real thing and I have it an unhealthy amount of it,  especially on these trips when there are great moments / memories made consistently throughout, even if you don't realize it at the time.  I plan on being healthier for the next one!

But RTs always deliver and this was no exception.  Golf...what a sport!  Wearing our new Ryder Cup-esque hats (great work Chrome!),  we watched Red call his shot and then hit an incredible walk off put in the dark after 36 on Friday.  We watched Chrome, Dan, Vandy, Sidor and Bort crush drives while Park talked about Russian politics.  And we got lucky with a Duke home game scheduled for Saturday night, as the RT grown men immediately pulled out their phones upon arrival to get video of 18-20 year old boys stretching 5 feet in front of us.  Those Zion calves are special.
Dan and Bort led the charge on Sat night - Bort is still drinking RBVs!  Even Chuck contributed, with a brewery hookup from 1K miles away.

Count me in for RT 14 after a few sessions in Geater's hyperbaric chamber.
